Sharing musical stories throughout the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota has become a staple for the organization. Our program representing the Mankato Symphony Orchestra kick off started Story Time with Chione which was made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Chione Quintet and now Larkspur Reed trio has continues to collaborate with organizations such as Classical Minnesota Public Radio, Chamber Music America, Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, Southeaster Library Collective (SELCO) and The Arrowhead Regional Library System to share our musical stories.
Larkspur Reed Trio continues to share educational programs through “Larkspur at the Library” with libraries, schools, and families throughout Minnesota and beyond.
Previous programs have included stories such as Peter and the Wolf, One Hen, Hansel and Gretel, The Unhappy Aardvark, Paka’a Lanakila, and The Carnival of Animals, and Shoua and the Northern Lights Dragon. Larkspur aims to engage students in active listening paired with activities such as theme recognition using American Sign Language and moving along to the beat.
The organization’s newest program, Isabel and Her Colores Go to School is about a little girl trying to find her place in a class where she does not speak the same language as the rest of the children. Although she cannot communicate through words, she finds a friend through Sarah, another little girl in the class. This story is about acceptance and love and it is perfect for everyone!
Story time programs have been enjoyed by ALL ages, from babies to children at heart. The pairing of music and stories is exciting for anyone and a memory that will last!
In November, the trio shared their presentation, “Educational Entrepreneurship: Creating Your Own Path as Performers” at the College Music Society National Conference in Washington DC. The organization hopes to inspire other ensembles and musicians to create similar programs or a brand new concept that doesn’t even exist yet!
